Memorial Day 2019

Memorial Day weekend has become a time for many families to get away and enjoy the kick-off to summer.

On the other hand, the freedoms we enjoy today, like a three-day weekend, are all made possible, because some gave all.

Whether you’re around the BBQ grill, out camping or spending time with loved ones, officials representing our armed forces are encouraging families to take some time and reflect the true meaning of Memorial Day; more than just picnics and parties.

For Lewis County residents, Military Honors to be rendered at the grave sites of veterans. The first will occur on Sunday, May 26th. The joint American Legion, VFW and Marine Corp League Honor Guard with leave from the Lowville Legion at Noon and travel to cemeteries in the following communities at the approximate times. Brantingham 12:30 p.m., Sperryville 1:30 p.m., Petries Corners 1:45 p.m., Beaches Bridge 2:00 p.m., Old Glendale 2:20 p.m., Martinsburg 2:30 p.m., West Martinsburg 2:45 p.m., West Lowville 3:00 p.m., Fairview, Vary Road 3:20PM, Swinburne, Roberts Road 3:30 p.m. and Hillside, State Route 26 at 3:45 p.m. *Times are subject to change.

Several parades will be held for Memorial Day all throughout the state, including some here in our local area. Here’s a list of area Memorial Day parades and other events:

Holland Patent- Parade begins Monday, May 27 at 10:30 a.m. and will run from the Middle School to the American Legion Post 161 on Depot Street.

Lowville- The parade begins at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 27 and will begin at the Ford Garage, ending at Veterans Park.

Natural Bridge- The Natural Bridge Fire Department will host their parade and chicken barbecue Saturday, May 25. The parade begins at 10:00 a.m., with chicken dinners ready to serve 11:00 a.m. until gone.

Old Forge- Residents are invited to attend village-wide garage sales all weekend long, plus a fireworks display Saturday, May 25 at dusk. The parade begins Monday, May 27 on Main Street at 10:00 a.m.

Poland- The parade is set to begin Monday, May 27 and will begin at the school, concluding at the Memorial Park, next to the Community Baptist Church.

Rome- A special ceremony will dedicate the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Monday, May 27 at 2:00 p.m.
