LEWIS COUNTY- A swath of new details is now developing from a fatal ATV accident this past weekend in New Bremen.
According to county officials, the accident, which occurred late Saturday at the Stuck in the Muck Off-Road Park, is correlated to an event that took place and reportedly turned out to be much larger than originally given permission for.
Organizer Eric D. Young told reporters from the Watertown Daily Times that he contacted the public health office and other officials about a group of people who would be doing some trail maintenance work.
Young said the group would consist of no more than 20 people, and that was confirmed by Chairman of Legislators, Lawrence Dolhof. “He had permission for up to 20 guys to social distance,” Dolhof told reporters.
The event was promoted through Facebook, though Mr. Young clarified that it was not an “official” stuck in the muck event.
According to county officials, the event turned out to blossom into a gathering where social distancing was not practiced, masks were not worn and the campgrounds were open, all going against current state anti-gathering laws in effect.
Danielluis Diaz, 30, was killed in an accident during the event.
State Police are investigating the case. It is currently unknown if any charges will be filed against the establishment.
