Officials have said it will be at-least one-year before there is any possible change to New York’s code that prohibits sex offenders from living within 1,000-feet of a school, but doesn’t specify parks or playgrounds.
In the meantime, local authorities in Jefferson County are taking aims to the board of legislators that would ultimately cement a short-term solution in the wake of a few concerning incidents in West Carthage – involving an inn near a playground that has housed sex offenders before.
This update is according to the latest information from WWNY-TV.
It’s reported that the DSS and Department of Corrections have housed clients at the Pleasant Night Inn, including some who are sex offenders.
The problem is that the establishment is right near a playground and there has been community uproar following a few recent incidents, including were a suspect was caught pleasuring himself within view of two children, who were on the nearby playground.
The short-term fix that has been proposed locally is similar to that of a background check, where the DSS would examine their clients’ records before housing them at the inn.
