CROGHAN - Gilbert Steiner Widrick, 84, passed away peacefully on Monday September 15, 2014 in the Lewis County Extended Care Facility with his family by his side.

Gilbert was born on April 11, 1930 on the family homestead in the town of New Bremen, a son of the late Rev. John J. and Luella V. Steiner Widrick. He attended Beaver River Central School. On April 12, 1952, he married Elizabeth Reed at Trinity Church Lowville, NY. Gilbert was a life-long dairy farmer and was the 4th generation on the Virkler farm. Following the fire in 1984, the community came together and rebuilt the current barn. Gilbert retired from farming when he was 74 and moved to Croghan with his wife, Betty. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.   Gilbert was on the Board of Directors at the Lowville Producers Dairy Cooperative, EAIC and Lewis County Farm Bureau. He was the recipient of the Dairy of Distinction Award.

He is survived by his loving wife of over 62 years, Betty; children, Deborah (Earl) Boliver of Lowville, NY, Gary (Jodelle) of Rockville, MD, Stephen (Carrie) of Camillus, NY, William (Beth Anne) of Turin, NY, Mary (Brian) Benton of Marietta, GA, Mark (Kelly) of Syracuse, NY and Scott (Nancy) of Baldwinsville, NY, Douglas Schneider of Croghan, NY; his grandchildren, Nichole (Matt) Stevens, Jeremy and Anne Boliver, Emily and Molly Widrick, William and James (Marja) Walker, Jacqueline Widrick and Jacob (Kelly) Widrick, Andrew and Jennifer Benton, Daniel, Jonathon, and Samuel Widrick; great grandchildren, Colin Boliver, Meghan and Olivia Cassells, Piper and Maverick Widrick. He is also survived by sisters, Rita (Jack) Ebersol of Canandaigua, Betty Nortz of Lowville, and brothers, Robert (Janice) Widrick of Lowville, Virgil Widrick of Croghan; a sister-in-law, Jeane Widrick of Cortland. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by his parents, John and Luella, his stepmother, Berdena Streeter Widrick, a son, John Gilbert Widrick, a brother, Boyce Widrick, a sister Evelyn Farney, and a sister-in-law, Carole Widrick.

The funeral will be Friday, September 19, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Apostolic Christian Church of America, Croghan, with ministers of the church officiating. Burial will follow the service in the Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday, September 18, 2014 from 5 – 8 p.m. at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., 5702 Waters Road, Lowville. Box 405, Croghan, NY 13327; or to Lewis County Office of the Aging, 7660 State St., Lowville, NY 13367; or a charity of one’s choice.
