Published on June 25, 2024

Remsen- Helen Louise Griswold, 84, affectionately known as “Gummie”, passed into eternal rest on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at home, surrounded by the love of her family. As the matriarch of her family, she was the glue that held everyone together. Her home was a welcoming hub of love. Her favorite thing was to be surrounded by the laughter and clatter of her large and spirited family. She was deeply proud of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Helen was born on October 23, 1939 to the late Joseph and Mary Wilcox. She was the fifth of ten children. Helen began her education at Our Lady of Lords in Utica. After the family moved north she attended Remsen Central School graduating in 1958.

While working as a waitress at the former Griswold’s Diner, Helen met Jack (John) Griswold. They were married in Niagara Falls and blessed with five children, Theresa, Joseph, Ann Margaret, Patricia and Michelle. Jack passed away in 1974. This left Helen with five children between the ages of a few months to nine years to raise on her own.

Helen spent many years of happiness with her special companion John Skermont. He also predeceased her.

Helen was a hard worker and often held more than one job at a time. She worked for Upstate Cerebral Palsy for 19 years. During her time there she served on various committees and was a mentor to others. Helen worked at Bailey’s Stop and Shop for many years. She also continued to work after the business changed ownership and became Northway Stop and Shop. She only stopped working when her health required her to do so at age 70.

Helen is survived by her children, Theresa and Dale Maida, Joe and Nina Griswold, Maggie and Jimmy Flood, Trish Plete and Dave Grower and Michelle and Dave Barrett; 14 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; sisters, Annie and Dave Dousharm and Elizabeth (Bit) Schoening; son-in-law, Ronald Plete and many cherished nieces, nephews and friends. Helen also leaves behind her extended family the Skermonts.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday June29, 2024 at Ackley-Mills Funeral Home, 9597 Main Street, Remsen. Calling hours will be held 12- 3 p.m. prior to the service.
