Ida May Ainsworth Winter longtime resident of Big Moose, widow of Robert C., passed away in Chesapeake, VA, on June 25, 2023.
She was born on August 11, 1925 in Big Moose, NY, a daughter of Danforth R. Ainsworth, Jr., and Gertrude Mulkins (Oakley) Ainsworth. After attending grade school in Big Moose, she graduated from the Town of Webb High School in 1943. She attended the Utica School of Commerce until securing a position as the secretary to the Dean of Admissions at St. Lawrence University.
On September 11, 1949, she married Robert C. Winter and in 1955 they returned to Big Moose and took on the ownership and the operation of Ainsworth Lodge. This was a blessed union that lasted until his death in 1995.
Ida was devoted to her family, her community, and her church. She held leadership positions in the Jolly Moosers, the Big Moose Community Chapel Board of Trustees, and was a 70 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was active in the American Legion Auxiliary and the Town of Webb Historical Association.
Left to cherish many fond memories are her three children: Rob (Jen) Winter Fayetteville, ; Virginia Winter (Bill Rivers), Boulder, CO; and Nancy Winter Traynor (Larry) in Chesapeake, VA. Several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A Memorial service will take place at the Big Moose Community Chapel at 11:00 am on Saturday, July 15, 2023. Private burial will be held in Riverview Cemetery, Old Forge. A reception will be held at the Little Fox from 1:00 to 3:30 pm on Saturday.
