GREIG – Irene J. Hunziker, 78, passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2014, at the Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility.

Mrs. Hunziker was born in Greig on August 13, 1935, the daughter of the late Oscar M. and Gertrude LaSure Rhone where she graduated from General Martin and was also a graduate of Syracuse Central City Business Institute. As a young woman, Irene worked for the telephone company in Florida, in Syracuse and in Old Forge. She was then married to Arthur Glenn Hunziker on October 13, 1955, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Greig with Rev. Charles Flaherty, officiating. The couple resided in the Greig area most of their married life, most recently living on the Patterson Road. Her beloved husband, Glenn died on April 8, 2009.

Irene was a communicant of St. Thomas Catholic Church where she was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society; taught summer church school and cleaned the church. She loved working in her garden, music and was an avid reader who was instrumental in starting the Greig Reading Room at the Town Hall. Irene was also very active in the Glenfield Elementary School PTO. She served the community as Town Clerk and Tax Collector for 12 years, retiring in 1996.

Surviving Mrs. Hunziker are her son and his wife, Aaron and Stephenie of Greig; three daughters and their spouses: Lydia and Rodney Wojnowski of Turin; Mary and Timothy Leach of Blue Mountain Lake and Nancy and Gregory Klaes of Houston, TX; six grandchildren, Diana and Scot Luther, Jesse and Sarah Bocinski, Benjamin Bocinski, Elizabeth Bocinski and her finance Matthew Hartnett, Zoey and Chloe Hunziker; two great-grandchildren, Harper and Silas Luther and her sister, Delores Bush, formerly of Glenfield, now living in NC.

Irene was predeceased by her infant children, Theresa and Andrew and her brothers, David and Claude Rhone.

A funeral mass will be said on Monday, January 20, 2014, at 12:00 noon at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church. Spring burial will take place in Brantingham Cemetery in the spring.

Calling hours will be prior to the funeral on Monday, January 20, 2014 from 9 -11 a.m. at the Sundquist Funeral Home.
