John “Jack” Henry Phillips

Alder Creek- John “Jack” Henry Phillips, 87, passed away on September 24, 2020 at Sunset Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Boonville.

He was born at the family home in Alder Creek, NY on November 6, 1932 a son of John Henry and Agnes Houghton Phillips. He attended a one room school house in Alder Creek until 1944 and then transferred to Remsen Central School where he graduated in 1950. He married Joan E. Conway in 1953 at St. Joseph’s Church, Boonville. Jack worked many jobs during his lifetime. He worked at General Electric in Utica, Olney Failing Logging, Lyons Falls Pulp & Paper and for Howard Gleasman and Clarence Payne as a plumber and carpenter. He also worked at H.R. Myers Lumber as a carpenter and plumber. His final employment was at Adirondack Central School in the bus garage retiring in 1996 after 25 years.

During his lifetime he cut logs and had them sawed out to build his home in which he was still living. He built everything except installing the electricity in 1963. He was always proud of his home. Jack was also proud of being a Boy Scout leader for Troop 13. In the winter in January they camped out one weekend during the year on the back hills of his parent’s farm in Alder Creek. If it got too cold or wet they would end up in the basement. They were very quiet so they did not wake the children. The next morning our house was full of 20 or so boy scouts and 3 or 4 boys scout leaders. There was the smell of hot chocolate, eggs, pancakes, bacon etc. What a great time and wonderful memory. The children all loved it.
