Keith L. Ernst

Carthage/Port Leyden-Keith L. Ernst, 87, of Meadow Brook Terrace, Carthage, passed away on January 11, 2021 at Carthage Hospital. 

He was born in the town of Leyden (Locust Grove) on November 7, 1933, a son of Nelson T. and Bertha Kotary Ernst. He grew up in Locust Grove where he attended a one room school house where his mother was the teacher. He continued his high school education at Port Leyden High school graduating with the class of 1951.

He was employed at Ethan-Allen of Boonville in the wood planer department, retiring in 1986. Keith was also employed at Bailey’s Feed Mill of Boonville for a time as well. He married Karen Kirk on June 6, 1964 at St. Martin’s Church in Port Leyden. The couple divorced in 1978. Keith served his country in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged. He enjoyed NASCAR racing, watching old westerns, and spending time with his family, especially his daughter and grandkids.

Surviving are his daughter, Tina Ernst (Glenfield); two grandchildren, Shawnee Hill (Glenfield), and Keith Maher (Boonville). He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Larry Ernst on February 17, 2017, and an infant brother at birth.

A memorial mass will be held on Thursday January 14, 2021 at 11 A.M. at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Port Leyden, with Rev. Lawrence Marullo as celebrant. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 417005, Boston, MA 02241-7005. Arrangements are by Mills Funeral Home, Boonville.
