M. Jeanne Callaghan
She was born April 26, 1942 in Saranac Lake, the daughter of Eugene P. and Mildred R. Sweeney Keough. Jeanne was a 1959 graduate of Saranac Lake High School and attended Albany Business College and was a 1963 graduate of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Watertown. She had been employed as a registered nurse at Mercy, Saranac Lake General Hospital, St. Anthony's Hospital, St. Petersburg, FL, St. Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston NJ, St. Joseph's Hospital, Syracuse and had done private duty nursing for 3 hospitals in Northern New Jersey. She was employed as a school nurse for South Lewis Central School in Glenfield and Constableville.
Jeanne married Stephen M. Callaghan on November 25, 1967 in St. Bernard's Church, Saranac Lake. She worked with her husband in the Callaghan Funeral Home, Port Leyden from 1973 until his death, July 23, 2011 and she became owner and operator of the Callaghan Funeral Home LLC.
She was a St. Martin's Church and it's Altar and Rosary Society member. She was a member of the former Port Leyden Monday Club, the Port Leyden PTO, and was a charter member and first president of the South Lewis Central Middle School and High School PTO. She was very active in St. Martin's Church. She was an avid reader and donated many books to the library. She loved spending time with her family and friends.
Jeanne is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Garth and Lissa Callaghan; one daughter and son-in-law, Colleen and Rob Kirkland; four grandchildren and one brother and sister-in-law, Ron and Peggy Keough.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Martin's Church, Port Leyden on July 3, 2023 with Rev. Lawrence Marullo officiating. Calling hours will be July 1, 2023 from 3-6 p.m. and July 2, 2023 from 1-4 p.m. at Mills Funeral Home, 301 Post Street, Boonville. Burial in Calvary Cemetery, Port Leyden. Donations may be made in her memory to the Port Leyden Community Library, P.O. Box 97, Port Leyden, NY 13433. A reception will be held at the Port Leyden Fire House. Donations of food may be left after 9 a.m.
