Richard A. Mooney

Published on March 14, 2022

Port Leyden- Richard A. Mooney, 80, of Fowlerville Road, husband of the late Mona, passed away on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, while surrounded by his loving family, at Lewis County Health System, Lowville.

Richard was born in the hamlet of Fowlerville, Town of Lyonsdale, on April 1, 1941, a son of Jessie and Mildred Rocker Mooney.  He grew up in Fowlerville, attending Pennysettlement Rural School, before completing his education at Port Leyden Central School.

He left school at an early age and began working to help support his family.  Always possessing a strong work ethic, as a youth he worked in the lumber camps of the western Adirondack region with his father.  Later he was employed at Lowville Co-op Feed Mill, before many years of employment as a heavy equipment operator for the Town of Watson Highway Department.

Mr. Mooney always enjoyed the outdoors and his favorite occupation was that of a logger, which he worked at throughout his career at the highway department and after retiring from the Town of Watson, when he drove log truck for his brother Jerry.  When not logging, he was happily employed trucking logs and pulp to many area paper mills, saw mills and Ethan Allen Furniture Co. Boonville.  He would often be seen driving over area roads accompanied by his beloved canine companions; Hobo, Rex and Hobo II, Rex II and Brandy.

He was united in marriage with Mona L. Jones, at the home of the bride in the Town of Watson.  Thereafter the couple lived in the Town of Watson, before returning to Fowlerville Road, Town of Lyonsdale, many years ago.  Mrs. Mooney passed away on February 17, 2022.

Foremost in Richard’s life was being able to spend time with his family.  He is survived by one daughter, Dawn Rushlow, Lyonsdale; two grandsons, Eric and Steve Rushlow, Springfield, MO; great grandchildren; a nephew, William (Roxanne) Mooney and their children, Logan and Collin, all of Lyonsdale; two brothers, Ted and Darlene and Keith and Nancy, all of Lyonsdale.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visitation hours on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, from 2-4 P.M. at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville.  A graveside service for Richard and Mona will follow in the spring at a date and time to be announced in Pennysettlement Cemetery, Town of Lyonsdale.
