Beaver River Honors Student suspended for brining coffee into class argues rule is not valid

LEWIS COUNTY- The Beaver River Central School District has responded to a scenario involving an honors student being suspended over bringing a cup of coffee into the first day of classes.

This development is according to the latest from WWNY-TV.

Julie Kaputa says she brought in a cup of coffee to her first period class, where her teacher gave the following ultimatums: dump it, consume it on the spot or head down to the office.

This is when Kaputa received an in-school suspension for bringing coffee into class, a violation of the district’s new regulation against any outside food or drinks.

Julie and her family argue if the new rule is even valid in the first place, claiming there was never a formal public hearing for the district taxpayers to discuss it.

Superintendent Todd Green told reporters though their monthly board meeting in August was technically considered a public hearing, after discussing with Julie, he now agrees the hearing was not properly announced.

For context, Superintendent Green says the new school regulation was put into place to promote a distraction free and safer learning environment.

A new public hearing will be taking place come Monday, September 14.
