Boonville Police warns of recent text scam accusing victims for speeding, unpaid fines

BOONVILLE- The Village Police Department is warning residents to beware of a recent text messaging scam that has popped up.

Police officials said on social media that people have been making complaints about a text message that accuses the receiver of speeding. Specifically, these texts state how a fixed camera has recorded you exceeding the speed limit and your fine remains unpaid.

Scammers go on to threaten their victims that if the fine is not settled within three days, their vehicle will fail its next upcoming inspection.

The Village Police Department is warning folks to disregard any messages like this. “You will never receive a random text like this that is legitimate,” police officials said.

For those who receive any sort of suspicious looking email or text, authorities remind to never click on any links or provide any sort of personal information.

Remember, police officials stress that scammers will always try an create a stressful urgency to trick their victims into reacting.
