DEC UPDATE: Vast majority of New York State downgraded to Drought Watch as of November 5

The vast majority of New York State has been downgraded to a drought watch, according to the DEC as of November 5.

Over the summer months and the early part of fall, several counties were declared under a drought warning, including right here in the North Country.

Precipitation has certainly improved in recent weeks, but still remains sub-par virtually across the entire state, the DEC declared.

Overall, general stream flows and groundwater levels have been improving gradually.

Still, as of Thursday, all of New York State (minus the New York City area and parts of Long Island) remains under a drought watch and that means that residents are still strongly encouraged to voluntarily conserve water.

“Thankfully, rain is providing communities across the state with some needed relief, resulting in downgrading from warning to watch in the Adirondacks, Southern Tier, and Great Lakes-area counties,” DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton said.

“While recent rainfall improved dry conditions for many counties in New York, drought watch remains in effect for much of the State and New Yorkers are asked to continue water conservation efforts. DEC experts continue to monitor conditions and coordinate closely with the Drought Management Task Force to issue recommendations that help protect our water supplies.”
