BOONVILLE- Two head officials for Boonville Lions Club received awards during the June meeting.

President Deniese Haskins was presented Monday with the 'Global Action Team Award.' She also received a 'New Voice' recognition from Lions District Governor Sheree Vora and New York State Senator Joe Griffo.

"Always proud to be a Lion and make an impact in our community," Haskins said. "Service doesn’t need to be grand to make a difference. We are Lions, we serve."

As an intro to the meeting, New York State Senator Joe Griffo attended as a guest speaker. He provided numerous updates on what's been happening in the State Legislature, while also fielding numerous questions and or concerns from attendees.

Out of the several topics discussed, Senator Griffo did express his thoughts regarding a measure introduced only a couple of days before the legislative session ended.

The bill, which has reportedly been approved in the State Assembly and State Senate, would essentially shift elections in New York to even years only, if signed into law by Governor Kathy Hochul.

Griffo said during the meeting he wasn't exactly sure how the potential law would impact local village and town elections, but made clear that most elections would essentially be held only on even years.

"The election commissioners are really concerned about this," Griffo said. "Think about this... during a Presidential or Gubernatorial year, you are going to have so many races."

If given the stamp of approval by Governor Hochul, it's reported that elections would not be affected this year.

Instead, local officials would have to run on a short term in order to eventually blend into the even-year cycle.
