Governor Hochul hosts roundtable meeting with New York agriculture leaders to discuss international markets, including potential impacts from trade tariffs
ALBANY, NY- Governor Kathy Hochul recently convened a roundtable with New York agriculture leaders to discuss global competitiveness and international markets in the wake of the Trump Administration’s trade tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China.
As of Tuesday, the Trump Administration has placed a 25-percent tariff on all goods from Canada and Mexico as well as a 10-percent tariff on energy resources from Canada (see official White House tariff fact sheet).
The impact is expected to raise costs for the average New Yorker by as much as $1,200 a year, according to a statement from the Governor's office.
With President Trump’s tariffs now in effect, the Governor is calling on all New York business owners, farmers and other agriculture producers to reach out and report any impacts via email:
“Many of our farmers rely on export sales of their products, and I’ll continue to do everything in my power to fight against this misguided tariff policy and ensure the government is doing what it is supposed to do, which is help, not hurt, New York farmers,” the Governor said in a released statement.
“I’m thankful to Governor Hochul for bringing key members of the agricultural community together to discuss the challenges that are before us, from the competitiveness of specialty crops to international trade agreements, and more," said New York's Commissioner of Agriculture, Richard A. Ball.
"Hearing directly from our farmers provides valuable perspective so that the State can understand how to better help and support our agricultural community—our farmers and our agribusinesses who provide food for our communities across the State and across the globe.”
On the other hand, despite the President claiming that Americans would likely feel "some pain" from his imposed tariffs, he believes there will be long-term benefits to be harvested down the road.
“WE WILL MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, AND IT WILL ALL BE WORTH THE PRICE THAT MUST BE PAID,” Trump wrote back in February on his Truth Social account.
“WE ARE A COUNTRY THAT IS NOW BEING RUN WITH COMMON SENSE — AND THE RESULTS WILL BE SPECTACULAR!!!”
During his address to Congress on Tuesday night, the President once again iterated a "little disturbance" to come from the tariffs.
“It may be a little bit of an adjustment period,” he said after claiming that farmers would benefit in the long-term from reciprocal tariffs on countries that have tariffs on U.S. exports. “You have to bear with me again and this will be even better.”
