NEWPORT- A barn went up in flames on New Year’s Eve in Herkimer County.
It was sometime around 5:30 p.m. when Newport Fire Department was dispatched to reports of a fully involved barn fire on the Strumlock Road, town of Newport.
Though firefighters eventually made good work to knock the flames down, water sources were an issue, as local ponds and streams were not suitable.
Instead, water had to come from the village of Poland and town of Deerfield fire hydrants.
Barneveld, Deerfield, Holland Patent, Middleville and Remsen Fire Departments all provided mutual aid.
Though there were no human injuries reported, emergency officials confirmed that there were five pigs that were lost in the blaze.
As of this report, a cause was not mentioned.
