LEWIS COUNTY- It's like having a school resource officer, only they are paid as a district employee.
That's what Superintendent of Beaver River Central School Todd Green told us about the district's newly hired School Safety Officer. The officer, who is retired from the Sheriff's Office, begins his duty at the school Monday, October 17.
The idea has been talked about before as the school has evolved to offer prevention services and support for when it comes to students and mental health.
"We did look at the SRO position, which would have been through the Sheriff's Department," he told us.
"Timing wasn't great for that, we could actually get a safety officer quicker if there was someone available. Budget purposes made sense for us as well."
Green says the officer will not only be there in the case of an emergency, but as a day-to-day resource for students.
