LOWVILLE- Local officials in Lewis County are warning folks to beware of a scam that has been reported recently.
According to the Lewis County Clerk Jake Moser, it has been brought to the attention of local figures that residents in downstate New York have been receiving what appears to be a court summons.
To clarify, the document is not e-mailed or texted to recipients, but rather mailed out physically. Specifically, Clerk Moser says this fake summons is accusing the recipient of having unpaid tolls (see example below):
There is even a QR code included the scammers want their victims to scan on these phony documents.
Mr. Moser says it is crucial that folks beware that this scam may eventually pop up here locally and it is imperative that recipients of this scam DO NOT scan the QR code to make a payment.
Moser assures that a legitimate court summons will never arrive with an accompanying QR code to make a payment.
