Local firefighter to North Country residents: It’s time to change your smoke detector batteries

Published on November 01, 2022

Smoke Detector

It’s that time of year where we turn our clocks back an hour, which also signals a reminder for homeowners and families to change their smoke detector batteries.

The National Fire Protection Association claims it started this campaign of changing our clocks and smoke detector batteries around the same time, twice-per-year.

The notice arises in the wake of a recent call for Boonville Fire Department, where crews were called out to an alarm sounding off at a home on the Domser Road, town of Leyden. Firefighters said no one was home when they arrived, but they did find a chirping smoke detector in a garbage can outside the address.

Boonville Assistant Fire Chief Dean Yauger says if your smoke detector is chirping, it means the battery is low and it needs replacement.

If you have a unit that does not have replaceable batteries and it begins chirping, emergency officials urge to replace it with a new one right away.
