MARCY- The investigation into the death of Mid-State Correctional Facility inmate, Messiah Nantwi, will be brought before a Grand Jury this spring.

This development is according to some of the latest from WKTV. As previously reported, Nantwi, 22, who was serving a five-year sentence for criminally possessing a weapon and was also indicted on murder charges in 2023, passed away at Wynn Hospital after being transferred from Mid-State on March 1.

According to the Governor’s Office, a total of 15 prison staff members were placed on administrative leave and much like the Robert Brooks investigation, the New York Attorney General’s Office recused itself from the case and instead appointed William Fitzpatrick, Onondaga District Attorney, to take over.

As of Monday morning, DA Fitzpatrick was still unable to confirm a cause or manner of Nantwi’s death with reporters.

With that said, a statement initially released from Governor Hochul’s Office suggests “extremely disturbing conduct” that resulted in Nantwi’s death.

In conclusion, DA Fitzpatrick clarified that a cause of death will be addressed following the necessary proceedings.

This coming April, the case is expected to be presented to a Grand Jury.
