Nearly a half-dozen raccoons test positive for rabies in Lewis County, Public Health Officials say

LEWIS COUNTY- Nearly a half-dozen raccoons have tested positive recently for rabies throughout Lewis County.

With these results confirmed thanks to the New York State Department of Health and their Wadsworth Laboratory, officials from the Public Health Office report 1 raccoon testing positive in the town of Leyden; 2 in the town of Turin; another one in the town of Lyonsdale and the last testing positive in the town of Croghan.

Additionally, Public Health officials in Lowville say that one person had contact with one of these raccoons and is currently undergoing rabies post-exposure treatment.

Lewis County Public Health reminds folks that rabies is a deadly disease that can be transmitted from infected animals to humans, especially when exposed via a bite or a scratch.

At the same time, health experts stress the importance of keeping your pets up to date on their rabies vaccinations.
