New E-Bike law in Lowville reflects existing New York State law

LOWVILLE- The village has passed a new law that regards the use of E-Bikes.

Though a state law already exists that requires users to wear a helmet and prohibits anyone under 16 from riding an E-Bike, Mayor Dan Salmon tells us the local law essentially reflects that of the state, with a few minor tweaks.

In addition to the minimal age and helmet requirements, the law essentially prohibits E-Bikes and like scooters from being operated on the sidewalks.

To clarify, Mayor Salmon told us that state law technically already prohibits regular bicycles on sidewalks, but he and others believe it is safer that kids ride on the sidewalks rather than in the streets.

In short, manual bikes and scooters have been omitted from the local law language.

Mayor Salmon says village officials will assess the issue in the future, if need be.

At the end of the day, the Mayor says this law is about safety, not about banning bikes.

It will be about another month before the language is finalized and the law takes effect.
