LEWIS COUNTY- It was originally reported that 20% of Copenhagen residents who voted in the last general election would be required to petition a public vote for the fate of the local fire department.
However, the New York State Conference of Mayors has a different story to tell. In the latest updates from WWNY-TV, the conference has revealed a critical clarification: 20% of the number of registered voters who participated in the last village election, not the general election.
This update means nearly 70 people will now have to sign the petition in order to have a public vote on the matter.
Village residents have 30-days to get enough signatures and that clock began ticking September 22. Village board members voted at day to disband the fire department in the wake of financial and book keeping woes.
