Nearly 7,000 tickets were issued and 139 people were arrested for drunken driving during the annual New York State Police DWI enforcement crackdown for Super Bowl weekend.
The initiative, which is funded by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) and was also carried out by local law enforcement agencies across the state, ran from February 9 -11.
For comparison, the New York State Police arrested 141 drunk drivers and issued over 8,300 tickets during last-year’s enforcement blitz.
For our local Troop D Region, 933 total tickets were issued this year, including 219 for speeding; 23 for distracted driving; 40 for seatbelt violations and 7 for moving over. Furthermore, 11 people were busted for drunk and/or impaired driving.
This year, state police confirm that there were no fatal wrecks investigated during the campaign.
With that said, there were 245 total accidents during the enforcement period, which resulted in injuries for 37 people.
