ON-AIR SEGMENT: Amidst a very busy winter season for area volunteer fire departments, Boonville's First Assistant Chief Yauger says fire prevention is an imperative measure families must take

BOONVILLE- You may remember last winter the frequency of roof collapses that were documented all across Central and Northern New York. This year, that frequency has been structure fires.

Ever since the first major cold this winter season settled in weeks ago, several fire officials here in the North Country will tell you that local fire departments have been pushed right to the max.

"Fire Departments right now are strapped," said Boonville's First Assistant Fire Chief, Dean Yauger. "Everybody around us. It has just been a crazy winter." 

On Friday, February 27, 2026, First Assistant Chief Yauger joined North Country News as discussed the importance of fire safety, including tips like making sure folks have their chimneys and heating systems inspected. 

Most importantly, First Assistant Chief Yauger stressed for everyone to ensure they have working smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors.
