ON-AIR SEGMENT: Lewis County Sheriff Carpinelli reminds snowmobilers to ride responsibly this season

LOWVILLE- It sounds like a broken record, but it is also a fact that dangerously high speeds and alcoholic beverage consumption are often times the primary factors for when it comes to snowmobile wrecks here in the North Country.

That is why Lewis County Sheriff, Mike Carpinelli, is reminding snowmobilers to ride safe and responsibly this season.

"It's the common sense of every rider, it's the responsibility and one big cooperative effort to make this work like we do up on Tug Hill," the Sheriff said.

"The manufacturers have built bigger and faster machines and a lot of times you are getting inexperienced riders going out and buying the same snowmobile that they think they would go out and buy a car with and it's not the same. You're talking about a much smaller machine with a lot of horse power and yeah, they have brakes, but they don't strop like cars do."

Be sure to listen to our latest on-air coverage with the Sheriff from Tuesday, January 7, 2025:

In the wake of a major lake effect snow blitz that unleashed over the weekend across parts of very southern Lewis County, along with most of Oneida and Oswego Counties, local officials are anticipating sled traffic to increase significantly.

For the next several days head, the National Weather Service forecasts temperatures well below freezing and officials say that should certainly help maintain favorable trail conditions, at-least for the time being.
