On Thursday, March 13, 2025, Lewis County Sheriff, Mike Carpinelli, and Oneida County Sheriff, Rob Maciol, joined North Country News and continued their on-air coverage regarding New York's on-going prison crisis.
Yes, the state has declared, once again, that the strikes are over, but the Governor says her overall prison staff is down to about 10,000 from 13,500 since guards took to the picket lines.
For context, the strike was damned as illegal by Governor Hochul, but the guards say their efforts were based on expressing what they say are even more risky and dangerous working conditions as a result of the HALT Act.
Sheriff Carpinelli and Sheriff Maciol have both been outspoken critics of the HALT Act and agree it has been long overdue for a complete scrap of the law.
