ROME- A Mohawk Valley man is faced with felony burglary charges for allegedly breaking into a series of storage units, authorities say.

Richard W. Cayton, 31, of Rome, NY was arrested Thursday by the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies say he is officially charged with two felony counts of burglary in the third-degree.

It was at around 1:30 a.m. Thursday when police were dispatched to Colonial Self Storage II on the Rome New London Road. Witnesses told dispatchers that someone was breaking into the storage units.

Police observed numerous locks that had damage. While checking the property, police report that Cayton was spooked out of hiding in a storage unit.

He fled into the nearby woods, but was soon located and taken into custody. Deputies said a second suspect was witnessed fleeing, but was not captured.

The investigation remains ongoing and additional charges are possible.

Cayton, who is currently on parole, was processed and held at the county jail, pending an arraignment.
