Over 12,000 tickets were issued statewide for this year’s annual Memorial Day weekend law enforcement blitz, according to an update from the New York State Police.

The special detail, which included joint efforts between State Troopers and local law enforcement agencies, ran last Friday through Monday.

For context, just shy of 11,000 tickets were issued during last year’s campaign.

Statewide, police arrested 245 people for drunken and/or impaired driving, while also responding to 774 crashes – three of which were fatal.

In our local Troop D region, 17 people were arrested for DWI, while 233 were ticketed for speeding; 39 for distracted driving; 110 for seatbelt violations and 8 for failing to move over.

During the campaign, which was partially funded by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, State Police utilized sobriety checkpoints, additional DWI patrols, and ticketed distracted drivers who used handheld electronic devices.
