Pair of animals test positive for rabies in Lewis County, Public Health Department says

LOWVILLE- Two wild animals recently tested positive for rabies in Lewis County, according to the Public Health Office.

One was a skunk in the town of Lowville and the other a raccoon in the town of Martinsburg. Public health officials confirmed there was no human and or domestic animal contact with the infected animals in question.

The results were confirmed by the New York State Department of Health.

The Public Health Office reminds folks that rabies is a deadly disease that can be transmitted to humans by an infected animal through a bite or a scratch.

Local experts also advise the importance of keeping your pets up to date with their rabies vaccinations.

There’s an upcoming rabies vaccine clinic at the Lewis County Fairgrounds on Thursday, September 18 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.
