ALBANY, NY- The latest proposed congressional maps, drawn up by a bipartisan redistricting commission, have been struck down by New York Democrats in the State Legislature.
Now, Democratic lawmakers will have to design a set of their own maps, according to the latest from the Associated Press. Does this all sound familiar?
The redistricting commission was supposed to have cemented a set of new maps in 2022, but ultimately failed to reach satisfaction.
The commission was created through a constitutional amendment, with aims of prohibiting any partisan gerrymandering.
There was quite the back-and-forth process initially when the commission first failed to establish the new maps, resulting in lawsuits and numerous court appearances over the matter.
However, Republicans managed to flip just enough congressional seats to win a narrow House majority after an appointed outside expert was brought in by the state’s highest court to finalize a new set of maps.
After losing out in the 2022 elections, New York Democrats sued to toss the independent expert’s maps out and give the commission another chance to draw new ones.
Now that the Democratically controlled legislature has struck down the latest proposed maps by the commission, they will have to design their own.
It’s reported that Republicans have already threatened a legal challenge.
