49 year old Brenda Roth of Deer River was in court Friday facing reinstated charges of Manslaughter in the 2nd Degree, Criminally Negligent Homicide, Tampering with Evidence as well as an original charge of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Roth was charged with the above counts stemming from the death of Derek M. Holton on December 28, 2014. Holton became unresponsive after allegedly ingesting prescription and over the counter medication at Roth’s Deer River residence. Judge Daniel King had dismissed the counts of Manslaughter, Criminally Negligent Homicide and Tampering with Evidence but an appellate court in Rochester reinstated them last month. Roth’s attorneys are attempting to appeal the appellate court’s ruling. If the case is not delayed further, Roth could face the charges in a trial possibly set for October 17th or December 5th.

23 year old Desiree J. Balcom of Glenfield, was sentenced to five years of probation and a six-month drivers license suspension on a charge of third-degree Unlawful Manufacture of Methamphetamine, a class "D" felony. She pleaded guilty to that charge on June 10th. She was additionally ordered to pay $375 in court fees. Ms. Balcom was accused of making methamphetamine on December 28th in Port Leyden.

45 year old Kurt Hazzard of Croghan was sentenced on Course Sexual Conduct Against a Child and other charges after a jury delivered a guilty verdict against him on May 19th. Hazard who is currently serving an eight-year sentence in State Prison for previous convictions, was sentenced to an additional 22 years in State Prison, with 15 years of post release parole on the count of first-degree “Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child”, a class "B" felony. He additionally received sentences of two to four years in State Prison each, on two counts of third-degree Incest, class "E" felonies. These sentences are to run consecutive to the other sentences. He was ordered to pay $1,425 in court fees and will be entered as a sex offender. Hazzard was accused of having sexual contact with a girl under the age of 13 between January 2003 and January 2008 and again in 2010 and 2012 in the towns of New Bremen and Croghan.

35 year old Jerrilee Hartle of Lowville pleaded guilty to Driving While Intoxicated, a Class e. Felony. This plea will also satisfy charges of Illegal Signal, second-degree Harassment, second-degree Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and No Head Lamp. Hartle was arrested on March 5th after being stopped while driving a tractor on South State Street in Lowville. Sentencing was scheduled for October 28th.

26 year old Bryan M. Spear of Glenfield entered guilty pleas to charges of third-degree Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, a class "B" felony; and felony Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated With a Child, a class "E" felony. Spear was remanded to the Lewis County Jail, with bail and bond revoked. He is accused of possessing methamphetamine in the town of Martinsburg on March 27th and driving while impaired with a child in the vehicle on May 10th in Lowville. Sentencing was set for October 28th.
