Several North Country counties under a Drought Watch, the DEC says
A drought watch has been issued for several counties across New York State.
According to the DEC, this list includes Hamilton, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Oswego and St. Lawrence (see latest map below):
“While it’s not mandatory, we’re encouraging everyone who lives in the drought watch areas to do what they can to conserve water during this dry weather,” said DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton.
With that said, the DEC clarified that the DEC will continue monitoring conditions. A few tips on conserving water include washing only full loads of dishes and/or laundry, taking shorter showers, washing cars less frequently and watering lawns when only absolutely necessary (see full list below):
- Water lawns only when necessary, choose watering methods that avoid waste, and water in the early morning to reduce evaporation and maximize soil hydration;
- Reuse water collected in rain barrels, dehumidifiers, or air conditioners to water plants;
- Raise lawn mower cutting heights. Longer grass is healthier with stronger roots and needs less water;
- Use a broom, not a hose, to clean driveways and sidewalks;
- Fix leaking pipes, hoses, and faucets;
- Wash only full loads of dishes and laundry;
- Take shorter showers or fill the bathtub partly;
- Install water saving plumbing fixtures;
- Don’t run the tap to make water hot or cold; and
- Wash cars less frequently.
A "watch" is the first of four levels of state drought advisories ("watch," "warning," "emergency" and "disaster"). There are no statewide mandatory water use restrictions in place under a drought watch, but residents are strongly encouraged to voluntarily conserve water. Local public water suppliers may require conservation measures, depending upon local needs and conditions.
New York's drought advisories are intended primarily for guidance to public and private water suppliers and withdrawals.
If you are experiencing a water shortage, please contact your water supplier, local agricultural extension, or local health department.
