ALBANY & WASHINGTON, D.C.- North Country Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY-21) and the New York House Republican Delegation have written a letter to Governor Kathy Hochul urging her to veto a bill that would eliminate a long standing 100-foot rule in New York.
Currently, the law forces utility companies to provide natural gas hook-ups to customers who would like one and are within 100-feet of an existing line.
On one side of the isle, the argument is that the cost of these free hook-ups eventually falls back on the taxpayers by driving up utility bills.
On the other hand, those who would like to see this bill vetoed, including Stefanik, claim that eliminating New York’s 100-foot rule would serve as a “direct” and “damaging” blow to families.
“Forcing future homeowners to shoulder the full material and installation costs for connecting to natural gas service with costs that are up to $14,000 per home will only worsen the state’s ongoing housing crisis and make the American Dream of home ownership less attainable for New Yorkers," the letter to Governor Hochul’s office reads.

Regardless of what results from this situation, reports confirm that this proposed legislation was called to the Governor’s desk last-week, meaning she will have to make up her mind sometime before the end of this week.
