WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congresswomen Elise Stefanik and Claudia Tenney (R-NY) have sent a letter to Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth advocating for the Army to host a small modular reactor (SMR) at Fort Drum.
In other words, there is a movement to establish a nuclear reactor at Fort Drum to fulfil its energy needs.
With that said, a small modular reactor would not match the size of the one along the shores of Lake Ontario, just east of Oswego, NY. “Fort Drum stands out as an ideal location for an SMR due to the Army's unique ownership of the utilities and infrastructure on the installation,” Stefanik and Tenney wrote in their letter.
“This significant investment in Upstate New York will provide the Northeast’s power projection platform with independent and secure power, bolster U.S. energy security, and cement Fort Drum’s importance to the modernization efforts of the Army.”
If the Army ultimately chooses Fort Drum as a site to host such an energy source, it is not clear yet (as of this report) when that will come to fruition.
