SYRACUSE- When the U.S. Supreme Court struck down New York’s old handgun licensing laws in June, Governor Kathy Hochul and the legislative majority responded quickly by re-writing a whole swath of new codes.
Since, there has been a back-and-forth legal struggle and now for the second time, a federal judge has declared numerous sections of these new laws to be unconstitutional.
This development is according to the Associated Press.
Like the first decision, U.S. District Judge Glenn Suddaby, again, declared certain aspects in the new list of codes that restrict concealed carrying of firearms in public places, such as parks, places of worship and etc., to be unconstitutional.
This second decision, for now, halts the State Police and local officials named in the lawsuit from enforcing these certain provisions.
Governor Hochul has said in the past that the re-written codes were done, with the intent in mind, of her goal to keep New Yorkers safe from gun violence.
The list of updated rules included measures to increase training for applicants, while also requiring more information to be turned in while applying.
