JEFFERSON & ONEIDA COUNTIES- It’s only March and there have already been two tornado warnings for the North Country – and it’s not even spring yet (technically).

On Sunday, a vicious line of strong thunderstorms blasted through New York State after leaving a destruction trail in areas to the southwest of our region.

Sometime around 5:30 p.m., the National Weather Service officially issued a tornado warning for northeastern Jefferson County after Doppler Radar detected a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado.

Rotation was detected, too, forecasters said.

A short while later just before 6:00 p.m., Doppler Radar picked up another severe thunderstorm in Northeastern Oneida County, which was capable of producing a tornado. The warning was declared as the storm approached the Forestport, NY area.

We have numerous accounts from local residents who witnessed heavy rains and high winds.

Some localized storm damage was noted, but we have yet to hear any official word from the National Weather Service on any sort of official tornado touchdown.

Listeners likely remember last summer, where the National Weather Service confirmed a total of 32 tornado touchdowns statewide.

In July, folks likely remember the tornados at Limekiln, Lee Center, Rome and Forestport.
