LOWVILLE- Firefighters were put to the test Tuesday morning in Lewis County with two calls in the same district going on at once.
At 10:20 a.m., Lowville Fire Department was dispatched to reports of a tree that fell down on some wires in the town of Watson.
Fire Chief Joe Austin says National Grid had to respond and kill the power before responders could act. Flames were observed where the lines were down.
About twenty minutes later while still on scene of the downed tree, Lowville Fire Department had another call just south of the Lowville Walmart, where a trailer hauling hay had caught ablaze.
Fortunately, New Bremen Fire Department saved the day with a full response to the fire in Watson, while Martinsburg Fire Department was called for one of their tankers to help tend with the hay trailer fire.
Town of Lowville assisted by spreading the hay out with their gradall, while the New York State DOT assisted, too.
Local law enforcement responded and a portion of State Route 12 was shut down for a brief time.
Meanwhile in Watson, National Grid successfully killed the power and firefighters successfully doused numerous pockets of flames before they could spread any further.
All fire departments returned to service by noontime. No injuries were reported.
