ALBANY, NY- North Country native and current U.S. ‘Border Czar’ Tom Homan is warning New York to change its state sanctuary status, or to “get out of the way because we’re going to do our jobs.”

Mr. Homan paid a visit to Albany, NY this past Wednesday, where he told the press that the way New York stands with its sanctuary status is getting in the way of getting his job done.

Specifically, the North Country native pointed blame towards the Green Light Law, which was enacted in New York in 2019 and allows anyone 16 and older to apply for their learner’s permit and /or driver’s license, regardless of their legal citizenship status.

The law was passed during the Cuomo era and intended to help migrants get insurance. For context, New York was the 13th state to pass such a measure.

However, the move was heavily criticized by upstate lawmakers, including North Country Assemblyman Ken Blankenbush, who is co-sponsoring a bill to do away with New York’s Green Light Law.

When the Green Light measure became law, New York Democrats said it held the promise of the American Dream for immigrants, but Blankenbush says the law stands as a barrier between local law enforcement and their ability to share information with federal authorities.

“Our law enforcement officers in the North Country are facing an uphill battle,” Blankenbush said in a statement this week.

“They need the ability to cooperate with federal immigration officials, and they need the resources to secure our border. Instead of aiding law enforcement, Albany has prioritized sanctuary policies that make our communities less safe.”
