There is more controversy involving the latest batch of gun laws in New York.
On Thursday, U.S. Federal District Judge John Sinatra Jr. temporarily blocked the segment of a state law that makes it a crime for people to carry guns into church and places of worship, according to an update from the Associated Press.
Earlier this year, the state legislature organized an emergency session in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s invalidation of New York’s original method of approving permits to people to carry guns outside the household.
In his ruling, Judge Sinatra claimed the state failed to demonstrate that the restriction comported with the June ruling of the Supreme Court. He further went on to explain that allowing citizens to carry guns into places of worship “would serve the public interest of fostering self-defense at places of worship across the state.”
Sinatra’s ruling sides with two Buffalo, NY area religious leaders, in conjunction with two gun rights organizations who had sued and sought a temporary restraining order to stop enforcement of the law while the case proceeds.
