WEST LEYDEN- Details are surfacing in the wake of Tuesday's tank truck accident in West Leyden, NY, the second such incident to occur in Lewis County in only a week.
As of this report, the portion of State Route 26, which was shut down for several hours between the Route 294 intersection and the four-corners in Ava, NY, has re-opened.
The Sheriff's Office in Lowville, NY confirmed with us that there are injuries stemming from this wreck, although the extent remains unknown.
This was an isolated incident, meaning only the tank truck was involved and there are no other vehicles believed to have influenced or somehow been involved with the wreck, officials told us.
The accident occurred right in the heart of West Leyden, very close to the small bridge carrying the East Branch of the Mohawk River.
The Sheriff's Office told us that they are aware of some spillage, though it's not known yet exactly how much or how long any leakage occurred.
Speaking of which, emergency responders told us the truck was transporting some sort of emulsified asphalt, or refined tar.
We anticipate official word from the DEC regarding any possible negative impacts for the East Branch.
Last Wednesday, authorities responded to a similar tank truck wreck that involved fuel on State Route 177, a few miles outside of Lowville. No injuries were reported for that incident.
In terms of the West Leyden wreck, we are expecting further details to develop.
We will share another update when anything new comes in.
