Joan P Ripp

 Joan was born on August 25, 1938 in Lowville, the daughter of Vernon and Elsie Mekkelson Sweeney.  A marriage to Frederick J. Ripp ended in divorce.  Joan worked for New York State Division for the Youth and in children and family services for over 30 years. After retiring, she became an Assistant Pastor with the local area Methodist Churches. Joan lived in Boonville prior to her stay at Sunset and was frequently out and about visiting the sick.

Joan is survived by four children and one daughter-in-law, Stephen (Terrie) Ripp of Lyons Falls, Susan Osterhoudt of Port Leyden, Scott (Laurie) Ripp of Constableville, Renee Ferreira of San Diego, CA, and Donna Ripp of Boonville; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two sons, Matthew V. Ripp and Robert H. Ripp; son-in-law, Edward W. Osterhoudt; a grandson, Samuel Ripp; a granddaughter, Courtney Ripp; and her brother, John Sweeney.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, September 2, 2025 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Mills Funeral Home, 301 Post Street, Boonville.  A graveside service will immediately follow the calling hours at 1:00 p.m. at Calvary Cemetery in Port Leyden, with Pastor David Hedeen officiating.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Joan’s name may be made to Lewis County Taking Care of Our Own, P.O. Box 155 Lyons Falls, NY 13368.   

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Sunset Nursing Home, especially the staff on C-Wing.  Also, a special thank you to Carla Crowley who befriended Joan and checked on her when family was unable to.
