Forestport -  Joseph E. Hebert, 87, of Newton St., passed away on Tuesday, May 27, 2025 while surrounded by his loving family at Wynn Hospital, Utica.

A lifelong resident of Forestport, Joe was born on January 7, 1938, a son of Ernest and Ida Winters Hebert.  He was a graduate of Forestport High School with the Class of 1957.  On November 25, 1961, Joseph was united in marriage with Shirley J. Casey at St. Martin’s Church Rectory, Port Leyden. Mrs. Hebert passed away on April 5, 2011.

Joe was a talented vehicle mechanic and worked at various garages and dealerships through the years, including Bourgeois Esso Station Boonville, and the Adirondack Central School bus garage, from where he retired in 2000.

Joe began his volunteer service with the Forestport Fire Department as a teenager remaining an active and integral member of the department for over 70 years.  He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, and also enjoyed snowmobiling and attending many local dances with his wife Shirley. 

He is survived by his daughters: Laurie Marmon, Clinton, Gail (Tim) McGurk, and June Hebert, all of Forestport, his step-daughter: Debra Burris, Maine, step-son: Charles (Tammy) Marsden, Arizona, several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  Besides his wife Shirley, he was predeceased by his sisters: Beatrice Wood and Elizabeth Montgomery.

His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, June 2, at 11:00 am at St. Patrick’s Church, Forestport, with Rev. Matthew Rawson officiating.  Calling hours will be held on Sunday, June 1, from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville.  Memorial contributions may be made to Forestport Fire Fighters, Inc. 11965 River St. Forestport, NY 13338.
