AVA- Larry L. Backer, 75, long-time resident of State Route 26, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 25, 2026 at his home.

He was born on June 24, 1951 in Rome, a son of the late Willard and Marjorie Hurlbut Backer. Larry grew up in Ava and graduated from Boonville High School. Following graduation, he attended State University of New York Agricultural and Technical College at Canton (currently known as SUNY Canton). Larry helped run the Backer Sawmill at Ava Corners alongside his father for a time before heading to work as a corrections officer at Mohawk Correctional Facility in Rome, where he retired from after 30 years.

Larry enjoyed finding bargains and saving money. In his younger years, he enjoyed rabbit hunting.

Larry is survived by two sons, Brian Backer and Scott (Emilee) Backer; two stepsons, Ryan and Sean Conway; one grandson, Emmett Backer; one brother, Mark (Ann) Backer; a special cousin, Hody (Michelle) Backer; one niece, Rene; one nephew, Kyle; and his caretaker and former wife, Jackie.

He was predeceased by his parents and the mother of his children, Betty Backer.

Larry’s funeral will be held on Tuesday, September 1, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. at Mills Funeral Home, 301 Post St., Boonville. Calling hours will precede the funeral service beginning at 10:00 a.m. and running until 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home on Tuesday. Burial will be in Ava Cemetery with his parents. Following burial, a luncheon will be held at the Ava Hilltop Church Fellowship Hall; all are welcome. Any food donations may be dropped off to the church on Tuesday morning. Memorial contributions in Larry’s memory may be made to the Ava Hilltop Church, 11447 State Route 26, Ava, NY 13303.
