LOWVILLE- Mary Lou Cataldo, 89, of Lowville, passed away August 27, 2026, at Elderwood of Uihlein at Lake Placid.

Surviving Mary Lou (and Edward) are their three adult children: John E., Cortland; Patricia L. (Ed) Chehovin, Fairfax, VA; and Thomas J. (Benita), Adams; and their four adult grandchildren: Angela (Eric) Wildt, Brendan (Alison) Cataldo, Matthew (Chloe) Chehovin, and Joseph Cataldo, as well as two great-grandchildren: Kate Wildt and Maggie Cataldo. Mary Lou is also survived by her twin sister Betty Ann Denton, Lake Placid, NY, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Born April 4, 1937, Mary Lou was daughter of the late Cornelius J. and Elizabeth Jette Lanigan, Elizabethtown, NY. Mary Lou married F. Edward Cataldo, son of the late John H. and Angeline Bourgeois Cataldo, June 25, 1960, with Rev. William H. Coffey officiating, at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, Elizabethtown.

Mary Lou, a graduate of Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School and Plattsburgh Business Institute, worked as a telephone operator for AT&T. After she married, Mary Lou and her husband Edward raised their three children and worked side by side to manage the daily operations of their family business, Cataldo Hardware, Inc. on State Street for many years. Mary Lou was an inspector for the Lewis County Board of Elections and was active with the Lewis County Cooperative Extension.

Mary Lou valued spending time with her family and friends at the family's cottage on Brantingham Lake. She especially loved cooking, canning, baking, barbecuing, boating, berry picking, snowmobiling, making sugar on snow, playing cards and board games, laughing with others, and helping those in need.

Mary Lou was a member of the Monday Knitters Club. She adored knitting and crocheting. Over the years, she made countless sweaters, hats, mittens, afghans, and baby outfits for family members and friends. She also relished doing craft projects – designing wreaths and pinecone centerpieces for the holidays.

Mary Lou and Edward were communicants of St. Peter's Catholic Church, where Mary Lou was a member of St. Peter's Altar and Rosary Society and St. Therese's Guild and enjoyed participating in Church and community volunteer projects.

In addition to her parents, Mary Lou is predeceased by her husband Edward, her brother Joseph, and all her Cataldo brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Calling hours will be held 4-6pm, Thursday, September 10, at Iseneker Funeral Home, Lowville. The funeral Mass will be 11am, Friday, September 11, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Lowville, with Rev. Sony G. Pulickal officiating. Burial will immediately follow in the Lowville Rural Cemetery. A luncheon at St. Peter’s Church Fellowship Hall will immediately follow the graveside service. Any food donations may be taken directly to St. Peter’s Church Fellowship Hall on Friday morning. All are welcome.
