Remsen- Mike Melvin H. Kohl, 91, of Maple Avenue, husband of Catherine M., passed away at Wynn Hospital, Utica, on April 30, 2026, after a courageous battle.

Affectionately known as “Mike,” he was born in Port Leyden, on December 22, 1934, a son of Niels and Bessie Morrison Kohl, and grew up in during the dark days of the depression on the Kohl family farm in the Town of Lyonsdale. He walked several miles to attend Lyons Falls Central School, where throughout his school era in Lyons Falls, Mike excelled in athletics.

When Mike was in 10th grade, he moved to Chadwicks, where he made his home with his sisters, Wanda and Grace, attending Chadwicks High School, and was a very notable participant in track and field, basketball and baseball. He graduated from Chadwicks High School, with the Class of 1954.

On August 9, 1954, Mr. Kohl was inducted into the U.S. Army, serving his country during the Korean Conflict era and was stationed in Japan and honorably discharged with rank of Private First Class, on April 26, 1956. Afterwards he served in the US Army Reserves, until his honorable discharge on August 8, 1962.

In the later 1950’s, Mr. Kohl went on to attend Boston University, utilizing the G.I. Bill, to further his education, where he earned a bachelor degree in business administration. While attending college, Mike met the love of his life, Catherine.

On April 26, 1960, Mike was united in marriage with Catherine M. Levis, in Sommerville, MA. Afterwards the couple lived in Boston and Port Leyden, before moving to their present home on Maple Ave. in Remsen, in 1966. Together the Mike and Catherine created a family of love and a marriage which celebrated 66 years on April 26, 2026.

During the mid-1960’s Mr. Kohl began his lengthy and illustrious career with Oneida County Department of Social Services, serving for many years as a dedicated resource consultant and Senior Investigator

In addition to his career with Oneida County and his family, for over thirty years Mike dedicated himself to coaching Little league Baseball in Remsen, where he shaped not only skilled athletes, but also strong respected athletes.

In addition to his wife, Catherine, Mike is survived by three sons and one daughter in law, Michael (Moon) Kohl, Miami, FL, Peter Kohl, TX, Kevin Kohl, Ft. Lauderdale, FL; two daughters, Marie Kohl, Remsen and Michele Kohl and significant other, Rick Stefanski, Marcy; grandchildren, and several great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews and a sister in law, Helen Kohl.

His Funeral Service will be on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 1:00 P.M. at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, where Rev. Thomas I, Ward, pastor of St. Joseph’s Church, Boonville, will officiate. Calling hours are Friday, May 15, from 4-7 P.M. at the funeral home, where members of Charles J. Love Post American Legion, Harland J. Hennessey Post V.F.W. and the Tun Tavern Marine Corps League, will meet in a group at 7:00 P.M., for Military Rites.
