Lyons Falls- William E. Smith, 87, of Markham St., passed away on Friday, January 26, 2024, at the Carthage Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing.

William was born in April 22, 1936, a son of Edwin and Evelyn Hutchins Smith. He grew up on North Street, Port Leyden and graduated from Port Leyden Central School, with the Class of 1954. Later, in 1954, William entered the service of his country, serving in the U.S. Navy, stationed in the U.S., Japan, Guam and was honorably discharged in 1958, returning to Port Leyden.

In the late 1960’s Mr. Smith joined the ranks to the Lewis County Sheriff Department, beginning in road patrol for several years, before advancing to the position of Lewis County Under Sheriff, serving with Sheriff Floyd Martin. Mr. Smith found great satisfaction from his career in Law Enforcement, looking upon that era as the best time of his life.

For several years after he retired from the Sheriff Department, he was employed as a painting estimator for Winterton Painting Company of Rome.

He was a member of Forest Presbyterian Church, Lyons Falls, Charles J. Love Post American Legion, and Harland J. Hennessey Post V.F.W., both of Boonville. William greatly enjoyed the sport of Golf and playing in a golf club at Brantingham Golf Course and enjoyed visiting the Bear Creek Lodge, Forestport and at Cedars Golf Course, near Lowville. He also enjoyed watching sports of all kinds and in his younger years William greatly enjoyed hunting and fishing.

William was married to Joan Casey and from this marriage 5 sons were born; Edwin (Kim) Smith, Maryland, Matthew (Tina) Smith, Port Leyden, Craig (Heidi) Smith, Port Leyden, Patrick Smith, Remsen, William (Julie) Smith, Greig. Later William and Joan were divorced.

Later he married Patricia McIntyre, and from this marriage a son was born; Shawn (Cassie) Smith, Port Leyden. Also surviving are two step children, Brian (Melissa) Millick, Port Leyden and Michelle (Ed) Higby, Rome; twenty grandchildren and several great grandchildren; one sister, Judith (Bill) Korman, Greenwich, NY. He was predeceased by grandson, Matthew Smith and by a step son, Jeffrey Millick.

A graveside service with Police and Military Honors will be held in the spring, in Wildwood Cemetery, Lyons Falls, at a date and time to be announced. There are no calling hours. Mr. Smith was a canine and animal lover; memorial contributions may be made to The Lewis County Humane Society, P.O. Box 682, Lowville, NY 13367.
