AAA study: Nearly 58% of marijuana users drive high daily

Published on April 21, 2025

More than half of marijuana consumers surveyed in a recent study said they drive while high. For the first time, AAA  analyzed those consumers' thoughts, perceptions and reasons for driving under the influence. What they found is substantial. Not only did the study find that 57.8% indicated that they drive high daily, the study also found 46.9% believe they drive the same as when not high. “And 35% said they think they drive better when they're high,” said Elizabeth Carey, director of public relations for AAA of Western and Central New York. New York State Police said they saw an 11% increase in DWI drug use and a 25% increase in DWI intoxicated by alcohol in 2024. Carey says the consumers they spoke to are everyday people of all ages. Carey says the age group seeing the most increase in using marijuana is 55 to 65 year olds. New York State Police spokesmen Trooper James O’Callaghan warned older users that marijuana sold legally today is much stronger. The T.H.C. level of today’s marijuana is 30-40% compared to the vegetated marijuana sold illegally back in the 60’s, 70’s, which had a T.H.C. level of approximately 10 percent.
