As we emerge into this new season of spring, the bears are also emerging from their winter dens.
The New York State DEC warns our statewide black bear population tends to be hungry this time of year after a long winter nap.
Seeking to replenish their fat reserves, the DEC says bears will go wherever they can find consistent sources of food, including ones that are mainly created by humans.
Residents should start securing their garbage bins indoors; cleaning their outdoor grills and store any pet and/or livestock food inside, the DEC advises.
Taking these steps will help reduce negative encounters with bears and will reduce the likelihood of a bear becoming a problem in a local neighborhood or community.
